Epeiric Marine Unconventional Reservoir Variability: Cored Examples from the Permian in West Texas and the Cretaceous in the Powder River Basin

Objectives
This workshop explores variability in sedimentation, stratigraphic architecture, and reservoir character in examples of core from a continental seaway and an intracratonic basin rimmed by carbonate platforms. Participants will work with instructors to evaluate integrated stratigraphic, petrographic, and geochemical data and interpret the genesis of reservoir properties.
Course Content
Cores from both sediment-gravity-flow-dominated and mainly hemipelagic epeiric marine environments will be examined and compared to evaluate variety and origin of reservoir characteristics. Supporting high-resolution XRF chemostratigraphy, XRD, TOC, RCA, thin section, SEM, porosity, permeability, and rock mechanics data will be applied and integrated into interpretation.
Cored strata include: 1) siliciclastic turbidites from the Wolfcamp C (Midland Basin, Howard Co., Texas), 2) carbonate and siliciclastic sediment gravity flows from the Wolfcamp B/C and A/B (Delaware Basin, Winkler Co. and Pecos Co., Texas), and 3) mudrocks from the Niobrara Formation (Converse Co., Wyoming).
Itinerary Roster
In the morning, we will begin with a short introductory presentation. Then we will examine the Midland Basin and Delaware Basin cores as well as the accompanying datasets. This will be followed by a brief discussion of depositional setting, stratigraphic architecture, sediments, diagenesis, and reservoir properties.
In the afternoon, we will again begin with a short presentation to introduce the Powder River Basin depositional setting. Then we will work through the Powder River Basin core and accompanying datasets. This will be followed by a brief discussion of depositional setting, stratigraphic architecture, sediments, diagenesis, and reservoir properties as well as a brief comparison to the Permian Basin cores.

Outside temperatures can range from 75-100 degrees Fahrenheit, but we will be in a climate-controlled building for the duration of the workshop. Closed toed shoes and face masks are required for this trip.
